NSW: Consumer advocate says NAB "raping" local communities
A consumer advocate says the Federal Government should punish banks through extra taxesif they continue to close branches.
The National Australia Bank announced today that 1,500 Australian jobs will go overthe next 18 months as part of a major restructuring plan.
The bank has previously announced it will close 56 country branches across Australia,affecting up to 5,000 jobs.
Consumer advocate JOHN McLENNAN has told Sky News the banks are raping the very communitiesthey're there to serve.
He says the federal government and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commissionshould set up an inquiry into the minimum standards required for bank representation.
He says that if banks don't meet those standards, they should face punitive taxes.
